KBRT is a Christian Talk station in the Los Angeles market with Studios in Costa Mesa near the John Wayne Airport and transmitter 26 miles off the California Coast on Catalina Island. Given the remoteness of the island, KBRT has a full-time engineer that lives out there with the transmitter. The main peril to operations there has been wild pigs rooting up the ground system.

KBRT Transmitter and Phasor
Nautel 10 kW. Audio is fed via a T1 line and QEI Catlinks.
Prior to the T1 line, audio was fed by 950 MHz microwave that was subject to fading.

KBRT shares the 740 kHz frequency with San Francisco's 50,000-watt Newsradio KCBS, which booms down to LA as the sun goes down. Therefore, KBRT is only licensed to operate during daylight hours.

There are 3 towers that direct the 10,000-watt signal towards Los Angeles.

Mike Duffy and I, as Radio Services Group, service the Costa Mesa studios. Mike has been involved with KBRT for many years, as he had a similar partnership to RSG with David Rea called Spectrum Analysis. David passed away in December of 2000, unexpectedly of heart failure. We all were shocked and miss our good friend.
